At 11am Sir Robin Knox Johnson opened the show from the deck of the sailing ship Kaselot.

Built in Denmark in 1948 it became famous after appearing in films such as Return To Treasure Island 1986, and more recently BBC TV drama Poldark filmed in 2016.

Midday and the growing crowd waited with baited breath at the Sunseeker stand for pop band Duran Duran’s Simon Le Bon.  He arrived in style on the flybridge of one of their yachts and was greeted onto the pontoon by cheering fans.

Next Sir Robin was joined by Dee Caffari MBE and Mike Golding at the Yacht Market.com to explain the new initiatives being undertaken in marine conservation, and all the exciting developments planned for the Southampton Boat Show in future years.

Dee Caffari MBE sailed solo, non stop around the world in 2006 and Mike Golding OBE is a Round the World Race Winner.

The warm weather and light winds helped swell the numbers as the show got off to an excellent start in what promises to be a bumper week of entertainment for all the family with loads of stalls to browse and activities available both on and off the water.

In case of bad weather there are plenty of covered areas including Ocean Hall.

Today independent watersports publishers’ Fernhurst Books were hosting a book launch, and amongst those present were champion sailor Ian Walker MBE, winner of two silver Olympic medals and RYA Director of Racing.

In Bed with the Atlantic by Kitiara Pascoe tells the remarkable story of the author’s 18,000 mile voyage of self discovery.

The RAF Yacht Club’s stall is also worth a visit as its volunteers always give a warm welcome.
