The PSP Southampton Boat Show was in full swing on Sunday 15 September as wind and rain failed to deter the crowds with over 20,000 visitors so far.
The show runs for ten days until Sunday 29 September and the organisers hope they are in line to top last year’s 100,000 turnout.
Getting from Southampton rail station via the free bus to the entrance required a bit of guess work and a lot of walking but once there the site bustled with lots to see and do.
There was lots of undercover space on shore to shelter in as well as boats to see around on the nearby moorings.
The wind closed in gusting strongly as the first rain swept over us.
Fortunately the exhibitors were very welcoming. In the Hardy 62, below, we could hardly hear with wind whistling by. I could easily see myself relaxing on board watching the flat screen TV as the boat gently rocked.
Princess Yachts were displaying a selection of their famous luxury motor yachts. Pictured below is the interior of their 72 footer. I couldn’t help thinking its light and airy appeal would be better suited to the warmer Mediterranean climate. If I was tucked up in an English marina for the winter I would prefer a more cosy ‘around the fire’feel.
But the beauty of sailing is that it takes all sorts in all weathers. Southampton, at the mouth of the Solent has seen the start of many around the world challenges undertaken by famous yachting enthusiasts. Below, the next generation of top British sailors are readying for the tasks ahead.
After I dived back into the elaborate network of marquees I discovered a gem which warrants a further look. Becki Milton is the manager of Porto Montenegro marina on the Adriatic.
The scenery pictures looked stunning. As Becki explained the location to me on their map it became clear that a lot of thought had gone into the choice. There were scenic bays close to the marina and ideal for those first venturing out, while at the same time loads to visit for others wanting a fortnight’s cruise.
“We are in our third year and it’s growing all the time.”She said. ” The area caters for everyone. There are large contingents from both Russia and the UK. The accommodation ranges from plush hotels to budget priced guest houses and there is plenty to do and see.”
I’m certainly tempted. Oh, to winter abroad…..
