Cowes Classic Week 2018

Cowes Classic Week 2018 , 22-27 July is enjoying increased popularity as the ‘go to’ event before the main regatta which starts on 6th August this year.

All our images were supplied by the organisers with many thanks to photographer Tim Jeffreys.

The five day annual event was hosted by the Royal London Yacht Club for 19 classes of keelboats all designed before 1978.

The oldest boat competing was Spinaway a Plymouth Hooker built in 1889 and the fleet included classes of XOD’s, Darings, Solent Sunbeams, Contessa 26’s, Folkboats and Etchells.

This year the regatta was dogged by mostly light winds which always tests crews in the Solent although our photos below show some lively conditions out on the water and thanks must go again to the sponsors mentioned at the end of our article.

Lawrence Wride’s 1967 one tonner, Sunmaid V , was both class and overall winner of the event.

The organising club, the Royal London Yacht Club, was supported by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club and Island Sailing Club.  The famous RLYC Winkworth tea parties once again took place every afternoon and there was, as always, a full calendar of evening social events.

Cowes Classics Week 2018 was supported by sponsors Charles Stanley Direct, Winkworth, Red Funnel, Cowes Harbour Commission, Kendalls Fine Art, Clare Lallows boatyard, Classic Boat magazine, Zhik clothing and Robert Oatley Fine Wines.

The next Cowes Classics Week will be held 27 July to 2 August 2019.
