Cowes Week 2018
Lendy Cowes Week 2018 got off to a fabulous start on Saturday 4th August despite sweltering temperatures and light airs.
Cowes Week owes its origins to the Royal Yacht Squadron which was originally founded in 1815.
From its headquarters at the Castle, with magnificent views sweeping across the Solent, yacht racing has been organised here ever since 1826.
And by 1840 non-RYS yachts were welcomed to compete giving rise to the modern regatta of today.
Today, 4th August, the first day of Cowes Week 2018 saw the J 90’s class start first with 36 entries and was won by John & Kate Greenland in JDog.
Other starts included the Etchells and the XODs, and the biggest class, the Squibs has 100 yachts competing.
Ashore there is a massive range of activities to choose from with plenty to do and see for the non sailing members of the family ranging from the ticket invitation only events, like the Squadron Ball to eat in your fingers fish and chips.
The weather forecast is for hot sunshine with perhaps a bit more wind later in the week.
It’s important to remember to take plenty of water with you whether you are out on the water or visiting Isle of Wight sights onshore such as Osborne House or taking the bus to Newport which has the nearest branch of Primark.
