The Rolex Middle Sea Race 2019 is the 40th anniversary of this remarkable Mediterranean event centred on the island of Malta.
Elusive 2 won on corrected handicap time. The Valletta based, First 45 is owned and crewed by the members of the Podesta family who have a long tradition with this race.
Elusive 2 won both the IRC class 4 and the was winner overall on a corrected time of 4 days 18 hours 27 minutes and 28 seconds.
Winner of IRC class 1 and the largest boat to enter, was George David’s Rambler, a JYD Canting Keel 88ft Maxi. They came 24th overall with a corrected time of d5 h6 m1 s15
The 606 course circumnavigates Sicily anti-clockwise passing through the Messina Strait before turning west to Favignana and southwards to leave Pantelleria to port before rounding Lampedusa and back to Grand harbour.
Hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club the race this year attracted 113 entrants who started the race on 19th October.
Line honours went once again to Rambler, also known as Rambler 88 for a record fifth time.
“It all depends on the weather,” said owner skipper George David who broke the course record in 2007 of 47:55.03.
